BSNL Kerala Launches Solar Rooftop Power Plant on its Building

BSNL Kerala is setting up solar rooftop power plants of 505 kWp capacity on its buildings in the state, with the first one being commissioned on the administrative building in Manacaud here.
P.T. Mathew, Chief General Manager, BSNL Kerala, inaugurated the first grid interactive solar power plant of 65 kWp capacity at Manacaud on Saturday, an official spokesman said here.

Also present on the occasion were S.S. Thampi, Principal General Manager, and S.H. Govindraddi, Senior Chief Engineer (Electrical). Similar plants will be commissioned on 12 more BSNL buildings this month.Ultimately, this will be scaled up to a project involving 2,000 kWp capacity, extending all over the state, utilising the shadow-free rooftops of all telephone exchange buildings, a BSNL spokesman said here.According to him, the solar project initiative has been conceptualised on the RESCO (Renewable Energy Service Company) model, with zero investment from BSNL.

According to the model requirements, the capital investment is made by the solar developer and the solar power generated will be made available to BSNL at a fixed rate for the next 25 years.BSNL will have the right to ‘open access’ to wheel the excess electricity to the grid, and this could alos be used by another BSNL building. This endeavour would not only save on BSNL’s electricity charges, but would also contribute towards ensuring a green and clean atmosphere by reducing carbon emissions. The total capacity of the current array of 505 kWp solar power plants is approximately 7.4 lakh units of pollution-free electricity annually. This will, in turn, reduce about 600 tonnes of carbon emission.BSNL is committed to implementing more solar projects in Kerala, the spokesman said, extending its green initiative and discharging part of its corporate social responsibility as well.
